Lavin and Power impress, 27-year old hurdle record tumbles in Madrid

Nadia Power and Sarah Lavin continued an impressive indoor season for Irish athletes on Wednesday evening.

Power finished third in the women's 800m at the World Indoor Tour final in Madrid.

While Limerick native Lavin twice set a personal best en route to a third place finish in the women's 60m hurdles.

Lavin ran a time of 8.13seconds behind race winner Nadine Visser, and second placed Teresa Errandonea.

Power had twice broken the Irish indoor 800m record in recent weeks, but didn't need to reproduce such heroics in the Spanish capital.

She ran a time of 2:01.55 in placing third behind Ethiopia's Habitam Alemu, and Esther Guerrero. Another Irish runner - Louise Shanahan came home fourth behind Power.

Elsewhere, Andrew Coscoran placed a very respectable fifth in the men's 1500m, running a time of 3:39.61.

And Leon Reid missed out on a place in the men's 60m final, running a time of 6.74.

But performance of the night belonged to American sprinter Grant Holloway.

He broke the 27-year old indoor 60m hurdles record of Colin Jackson. The Welsh sprint legend had set the previous best in 1994, three-years before Holloway was born.

Holloway shaved one-hundredth of a second of Jackson's best, running a time of 7.29seconds.
