Klopp questions UK government's interest in football's finances

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has questioned the British government's suggestion that Premier League clubs should financially help lower league clubs.

Several EFL and National League club executives have called on Downing Street to help clubs forced to soldier on without fans.

Many have warned that clubs could go out of business with supporters potentially locked out of stadiums in England until the new year.

British Culture secretary Oliver Dowden said he would be, "asking sports to help themselves - starting with the Premier League in respect of football."

"In general I think that people in a better position should help people in a lesser position - 100%," Klopp said in response at his weekly press conference.

"I don't understand the structure here 100% completely, but in Germany the first and second division are together so they share their problems - if you like.

"I think that makes things sometimes slightly easier.

"It's difficult, I don't think there is a general answer - people in a better position should help other people but the position in this moment is that it is not really easy for all clubs, as we all know.

"I don't know how the government finds time to think about that, I thought they would have enough to do with other things - but I get it.

"So, yes football should try and help itself."

Henderson out, Thiago in?

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will miss Monday's Premier League clash with Arsenal at Anfield.

The midfielder was withdrawn at half-time of last weekend's 2-0 win at Chelsea and was replaced by recent signing Thiago.

"Hendo not yet, that was clear," Klopp said, "This game is for sure too early. I think that’s it, pretty much."

Klopp was asked if Thiago would deputise for his captain again on Monday, "We will see, we will see,” he replied. “We have a few days to train, some boys have to recover from last night, so we will see how we set up against Arsenal.

“I have an idea, but why should I make the decision today when we have time until Monday? But he is in contention, for sure. Yeah, let’s see."

Defender Joe Gomez returned to training on Friday, but Joel Matip remains a confirmed absentee.
