Kick teams out to make example of ultra-defensive football - Kieran Donaghy

Kieran Donaghy has said he would kick out ultra-defensive young teams from competitions in order to avoid tactics seen in the game between St Patrick's of Maghera and Abbey CBS.

The match featured heavily defensive tactics from both sides, and finished with a 0-02 to 0-01 victory for St Patrick's, but Donaghy is thoroughly unconvinced by the tactics.

"I possibly would [kick the teams out of the competition] to make the example of it.

"They are going on to play in the Hogan Cup at school level - that is the ultimate prize for any team. Something has to be done because we can sit and talk all night every night about it, but these lads obviously see it as the way to go."

"To be sitting there, looking at the highlights that I saw, which were first-half highlights, is madness. If we let coaches get away with that..."

Kieran was also keen to point out that it was not the intention to punish the players, but rather dissuade coaches that might be tempted to do similar to these two teams to reconsider.

"It is a radical thing, but my fear is that other guys are going to copy. We have had reports from elsewhere of scores like 0-03 to 0-02, and if that is the way that it is going to go then we have to protect this valuable game that we call Gaelic football and how precious that it is in people's hearts."
