Kevin Sheedy and Mike Newell end their stormy spell at Waterford

Kevin Sheedy has left his role as manager at Waterford FC.

Together with assistant Mike Newell, the Republic of Ireland legend departs the RSC a tempestuous five-months after their appointment.

Sheedy managed to last more than twice the duration of his predecessor at Waterford, John Sheridan, who left after just 65 days. The tandem of Sheedy and Newell mustered 139.

Waterford sit bottom of the SSE Airtricity Premier Division table, having won just 6-points from their first 9 games. Their only wins came against Derry City and Longford Town.

Sheedy's short reign has been packed with incident, with rumours of arguments with senior players, and Newell regularly falling foul of match officials.

Recent matches have seen him name benches with just three and four substitutes.

Barely a fortnight ago, Sheedy had to deny rumours that he had resigned following a training ground bust-up.

He refused to answer questions regarding goalkeeper Brian Murphy's surprise absence from a recent defeat to Bohemians amid rumours the pair had fallen out.

The experienced keeper attempted to clarify the matter on social media, saying, "Results have not gone our way recently which we are all disappointed by, I did discuss sone things with management leading up to Friday’s game, which will remain private.

“Anything outside of that is untrue. I am fit and available to play, I wasn’t selected. I was disappointed by that decision but we move on."

Rumours of a separate falling-out with Oscar Brennan were also refuted.

Newell was sent to the stands in no fewer than three games this season, starting with their opening night defeat away to Drogheda United.

The ex-Everton and Blackburn Rovers striker was also red-carded for arguing over the colour of a substitute's sock tape in last month's 1-0 defeat away to St. Patrick's Athletic.

Waterford's head of academy Mike Geoghegan will take charge of first team affairs for Saturday's visit of Drogheda to the RSC.

FAI confirm full contact training allowed at all levels from Monday
