"It was wild" | Kevin McManamon on All-Ireland final draw

Kevin McManamon was on OTB AM on Thursday discussing the final minutes of the first All-Ireland final against Kerry this year.

The madness and intensity of the game in the dying moments had everyone watching on the edge of their seat but it was something that McManamon said didn't mentally affect him.

“It was wild and I was delighted when I came on that I didn’t feel any of that. It was in my mind leading up to it, ‘Am I going to be thinking what will I do if we win or lose’ but I was very in the moment at the time, I was delighted we got away with it but it was wild."

McManamon, however, did recall being tired from the intensity of the game when he made it on.

“I remember being absolutely wrecked. The most I’d ran, for the whole game, on the sideline, was about six or seven seconds and the first play I had was 45 seconds of legging it and I literally was finished. In the replay, I was running around the dressing room like a nutcase at half time trying to waste all this energy I'd been building up.”

The thought of the five-in-a-row was something that the players tried to distance themselves from according to McManamon despite it being hard to do so. McManamon also questioned the link between that pressure and the final minutes of the game.

“Did it lead to us underperforming that day? We underperformed a little bit, we had a good shot/score ratio up until the last seven or eight minutes in that game.”

“I wasn’t really dwelling on it, [the missed shots] to be honest with you. The feeling of the team was just to get the ball back and it was a good defensive performance in the last seven or eight minutes but there were no eyes up to heaven saying ‘are we cursed here’ it was just a case of getting the ball back.”
