Seán Cox and his family returned to Anfield for the first time yesterday since he suffered a serious brain injury following an assault outside the stadium.
Seán was accompanied by his wife Martina and his son in the stands to watch Liverpool defeat Manchester City 3-1 in the Premier League.
Seán Cox has been receiving rehabilitative treatment in Sheffield in the wake of the unprovoked attack by a Roma supporter in 2018 which changed his life.
Liverpool helped the family in their fundraising efforts by supporting a 'legends' charity match in Dublin earlier this year that raised €748,000 for Sean's care.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had some warm words for Seán in his programme notes:
"Sean's story has touched all of us, and although initially, the emotions were one of sadness that his life has been affected purely by coming to support the football team he loves, we now have feelings when we hear his name mentioned. Seán's name and that of his wife Martina and his wider family makes me think of courage, spirit, and renewal."
The boss on seeing Seán Cox today...
"He was very happy to see me, but I thought I was much more happy to see him, so I think we had a draw! It was really, really nice. His wife and son were there as well, so it was a wonderful day for them, that’s exactly what we wanted." ❤️ https://t.co/4BqirnD3sZ— Liverpool FC (@LFC) November 10, 2019
After the victory over Manchester City, Klopp spoke at the post-match press conference about meeting Dunboyne native Séan:
"It was very nice and he was obviously very happy to see me and I thought I am much more happy to see him. It was really, really nice. His wife and son were there as well. It was a wonderful day for them. It was exactly what we wanted.
Klopp said that Sean Cox would be a guest of the club any time he returned to Anfield:
"Seán can move to Liverpool and then he gets a season ticket, one hundred percent, because for all the boys it was really important news when we heard he was able to go to the stadium and watch a football game. I saw him today and yes, he could enjoy the game, so, all good."
