Jurgen Klopp signs new contract to remain as Liverpool manager

The good news keeps coming for Liverpool, with manager Jurgen Klopp signing a new contract extension.

The German - and his assistants Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz - will remain at Anfield until at least the summer of 2026.

Klopp and co's current deals were due to expire in the summer of 2024, but they will stay in situ for a further two years.

“There are so many words I could use to describe how I am feeling about this news… delighted, humbled, blessed, privileged and excited would be a start," he told Liverpool's website.

“There is just so much to love about this place. I knew that before I came here, I got to know it even better after I arrived and now I know it more than ever before.

Klopp is the man responsible for ending Liverpool's title drought, and has also led the club to the 2019 Champions League and this season's League Cup. On top of that, they remain firmly in the hunt on three more fronts this term - the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

Earlier this season he'd been unwilling to discuss and extension, insisting, "It's all fine how it is. It's over when it's over but it's far from being over so let's focus on that. We are in the middle of this season and that's all we are focused on."

The 54-year old warmed to the idea of an extension throughout the quadruple-chasing season, but told reporters in March that he'd further his tenure, "If I have the energy levels for it."

Klopp's representative Marc Koscike and Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon were at Anfield on Wednesday night when Liverpool placed one foot in the Champions League final by beating Villareal 2-0.

News of his extension will come as a massive boost, with the second leg of that Champions League semi-final still to come, as well as the FA Cup final against Chelsea and the remaining five games in the Premier League.

“There is a freshness about us as a club still and this energises me," said Klopp, "For as long as I have been here, our owners have been unbelievably committed and energetic about this club and it is clear that right now this applies to our future as much as I’ve ever known.

He added, "We are a club that is constantly moving in the right direction. We have a clear idea of what we want; we have a clear idea of how we try to achieve it. That’s always a great position to start from.

“When the owners brought the possibility to renew to me, I asked myself the question I’ve mused over publicly. Do I have the energy and vibe to give of myself again what this amazing place requires from the person in the manager’s office?

“I didn’t need too long to answer in truth. The answer was very simple… I’m in love with here and I feel fine!”
