If Belgium are to finally win a major international football tournament, striker Romelu Lukaku will be just as important to their chances as talisman Kevin De Bruyne. Consider that Eden Hazard has also declined from his previous peak, and Lukaku's goals are crucial if Belgium are to get to Wembley next month.
Former Manchester United player Lukaku has been in scintillating form since joining Inter Milan, scoring 24 goals last season as they won Serie A. He’s also found the net 36 times in his last 31 matches for Belgium, an average of more than a goal a game for the Red Devils.
I do believe Belgium are the ‘flat track bullies‘ of the European Championship, but this is the flat track stage, and even though De Bruyne is injured for the Group B opener against Russia, I expect Lukaku will be afforded chances.
Belgium have a strong midfield and Youri Tielemans is flourishing.
The Russians have conceded 16 goals in 9 games since the start of last year and it’s worth remembering that they were thumped 5-0 by Serbia last November. One can expect an open game and goals should be part of the bargain.
Belgium are ageing defensively and problems may surface later in the football competition against elite attacking teams, but for now, they may have enough for Russia in St Petersburg.
Lukaku appears to be value to score any time at odds against.
