John Cotter appointed interim manager of Cork City

John Cotter has been appointed interim manager of Cork City until the end of the season.

Current club captain Alan Bennett has taken up the position of interim assistant manager, while former player and current head of the Cork City Academy, Colin Healy, has also joined the backroom staff.

Cotter was the assistant to recently departed manager John Caulfield during his entire tenure at the club, during which time the management team won the FAI Cup in 2016 and a league and cup double in 2017.

In a statement released by the club on Wednesday morning, Cotter said: “I’m delighted and honoured to take up this new interim role. I’m looking forward to getting the head down now and trying to get the club back up the table as quickly as possible. We have an excellent team of backroom staff that can achieve that.”

Cotter previously had a successful spell as a Cork City player which saw him win the FAI Cup and League Cup with the club before moving into management with Avondale.

Cork City are currently third from bottom in the Premier Division with just 13 points from 14 games and are without a win in their last eight league games.

Former manager John Caulfield departed the club on Wednesday morning by mutual consent.

Speaking to Jamie Moore on the Off the Ball League of Ireland Podcast yesterday, former Cork City and current Doncaster Rovers midfielder, Kieran Sadlier expressed sadness at Caulfield's demise.

"It's sad but I'm not entirely surprised, with the way that things were going. I try to keep up with it and watch the games but it's hard to watch them over here", Sadlier said.

"But I think he's got to be remembered for all the good things he's done for the club. I was looking at his record earlier and he hasn't been outside of second place since he's been there."

Cotter’s first game in charge will be away to high-flying Bohemians on Friday night. Cork’s previous win in the league, and the last league win of the Caulfield era, was against Bohemians.
