Jerry Flannery has been confirmed as the new line-out coach at Harlequins.

The former Ireland hooker has been out of coaching since leaving his role as scrum coach at Munster in May of 2019.

Between hanging up his boots as a player in 2011 and taking up his coaching position at Munster, Flannery had worked as a strength and conditioning coach with Arsenal.

Quins' Head of Rugby Paul Gustard said of Flannery's appointment, "I am delighted we have been able to secure Fla’s services.

"I have spoken to him many times and I love his intensity, allied to his desire to personally improve in equal measure to his drive to raise the standard of those he coaches.

"He is very bright and articulate with a keen rugby mind and a strong passion for the game.

"He comes from a culture of hard working men, who play with a passion and purpose that we want from our team and I believe Jerry has a skill set and determination to help foster, alongside Bomb [scrum coach Adam Jones], a ruthless pack mentality with a hard edge based on strong fundamentals with no quarter given.

"He was the standout candidate in our process, and I am delighted he has chosen us."

Flannery says he's "excited" to be joining Harelquins, adding, "Gussy’s [Gustard's] passion for the art of coaching along with his drive to bring success to Harlequins was a big factor in my joining.

"I’m also looking forward to integrating with the other coaches, Adam Jones, Nick Evans and Sean Long, and working with Quins’ very talented playing group."

Meanwhile, Chris Robshaw will complete the 2019-20 season with Harlequins.

The club captain was due to depart on July 1 after his contract expired.

The Premiership season has been on hold due to coronavirus since mid-March, and Robshaw says this short contract extension will afford him the chance to say goodbye, "It’s great news personally to know I will have the chance to play my final game for my boyhood club.

"The pandemic has affected so many aspects of so many peoples' lives, I’m just grateful to the club for allowing me the opportunity to finish my final season with Harlequins."
