Jan Vertonghen's home robbed while Spurs on Champions League duty

The house of Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen was robbed by four men armed with knives while he was away on Champions League duty during the week.

His family were unharmed in the incident which saw men in balaclavas steal a number of items from the north London property.

Police in London have said the burglary occurred on Tuesday, March 10th while the 32-year-old was away in Germany as Spurs crashed out of the Champions League, losing to RB Leipzig.

A statement from the club today said:

"We have been supporting Jan and his family through this terribly traumatic time."

While a spokesperson for Met Police confirmed that, "police were called to a residential address in NW3 at 7.49 pm on 10 March to a report of a burglary.

"Officers attended. It was reported four men wearing balaclavas, armed with knives, had forced entry to the property and stolen a number of items before leaving.

"Nobody was injured. The suspects had left the scene before officers arrived. There have been no arrests and inquiries continue."

Such incidents involving professional footballers are not uncommon.

In December 2007, a gang of masked thieves broke into Steven Gerrard's home while he was on Champions League duty.

The Liverpool captain was away with the club for a match against Marseille.

A court in Merseyside later heard that the men involved were "extremely violent" and they threatened to abduct his children.

Gerrard's wife, Alex Curran, 27, was at the property with their two young children and their nanny, Lyndsey Johnston.
