'I doted on him' | Jack Charlton's brother Tommy pays tribute

Jack Charlton's brother Tommy has paid a warm tribute after his older sibling passed away on Friday at the age of 85.

Charlton has been fondly remembered as a Republic of Ireland manager who changed the perception of football in this country, bringing many special moments to the nation during his decade in charge of the national team.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast this morning, Tommy Charlton says he will miss his brother greatly.

"He was an extraordinary man you know? He was my big brother. I doted on him, I thought he was wonderful, from being a little kid I always looked up to him.

"I see that in other people, other people used to look upto him. He had an aura about him, and people respected him.

"He never failed to give me a new joke, he always had something he wanted to tell you. He was an amiable man, for all he was big. He would speak to anybody.

"A thing I remember about him, whenever we walked in public if someone came the other way with a child in a push-chair or something, he'd stop, have a look at the kid, and give them something silver. He would always have a 50 pence piece, he always gave them a bit of silver.

"He was always sort of amazed at being very popular and very famous. He took it in a very easygoing way. He was aware of the people in Ireland and he loved the people in Ireland. He loved doing the job for them, that was Jack. That was the way he was."

Tommy also spoke about the difficult relationship between Jack and Bobby Charlton, saying the two were polar opposite personalities.

"Bobby's a very reticent man, he's very, very insular. He keeps himself to himself and he doesn't like all the attention and things like that. Jack could handle anything and anybody.

"He was outgoing, you couldn't find two people who were more different in their character than Jack and Bob."
