Jack Byrne's Rovers return to coincide with champions' trophy lift

Jack Byrne is set to be confirmed as a Shamrock Rovers player once again as soon as Friday.

The return of the Republic of Ireland midfielder to Tallaght Stadium will be confirmed on the same day the Hoops get their hands on the SSE Airtricity Premier Division trophy.

Rovers complete their title-winning season with the televised visit of Drogheda United.

Byrne has been a free agent since a disastrous move to APOEL Nicosia was cut short in September, with the 25-year old only making five appearances for the Cypriot Premier League club.

A move back to Tallaght has been mooted for some time, although Rovers reportedly faced competition from bitter Dublin rivals - FAI Cup finalists Bohemians.

"I speak to Jack regularly, I know he’s had a lot of interest from the last few months and we haven’t been one of them," Rovers boss Stephen Bradley said earlier this week.

“I’ve stayed away from that conversation with Jack to give him that respect and allow him to make a decision. T

"he last few days, I’ve had really good conversations with Jack regarding I think he’s much clearer in his head with what he wants to do.

"If one of them is coming home, which I think it could well be, then we’re very interested in talking to him. He knows that, we’ve had that conversation. That happened recently in the last few days."

Byrne had also been linked with a potential move to MLS expansion team, Charlotte FC.
