Jack Byrne returns to Shamrock Rovers for a second spell with champions

Jack Byrne is a Shamrock Rovers player again, returning to Tallaght Stadium where his previous form earned him four Republic of Ireland caps.

The 25-year-old is believed to have agreed a two year deal.

The news was confirmed by the club on their social media page.

Byrne's first spell with Rovers was between January 2019 and January of this year. He helped them to the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division title in 2020, before departing for Cyprus to link up with Mick McCarthy at APOEL Nicosia.

McCarthy was sacked two days into Byrne's spell at APOEL and Byrne subsequently ended his stay in Cyprus, becoming a free agent.

Byrne, who started his career at Manchester City, will walk into a dressing room that retained the Premier Division title with games to spare.

Rovers' European campaign was less impressive, as they were knocked out of the Conference League qualifiers by Flora Tallinn.

Manager Stephen Bradley will be hoping Byrne's influence will lead to better fortunes in Europe in 2022.

The Dublin native made his Republic of Ireland debut in a friendly against Bulgaria in 2019.

Jack Byrne became the first League of Ireland player since 1985 to line out in a competitive game for the national team when he was introduced against Wales in a Nations League match by Stephen Kenny.

Rovers will be presented with the SSE Airtricity Premier Division trophy at their final game, which is against Drogheda United at Tallaght Stadium.
