Jack Byrne cut adrift as APOEL Nicosia cancel midfielder's contract

Jack Byrne's career has entered limbo with his contract cancelled by APOEL Nicosia.

The 25-year old only joined the Cypriot Premier League side in January of this year, just before the end of Mick McCarthy's brief tenure on the island.

However, Byrne saw McCarthy depart APOEL just two days after putting pen to paper on a two-year deal.

The Republic of Ireland international managed to play just 146 minutes in five appearances before a back injury prematurely ended his season.

Speaking back in March, Byrne claimed McCarthy's presence wasn't the only thing that convinced him to swap Tallaght for Nicosia.

"Mick obviously had an input on who he wanted to bring to the club but it was more the president and sporting director here that my agent was dealing with," he said, "They showed an interest in bringing me to the club.

"They knew APOEL wasn't my only option. The brought a plan to us, and the conversation I was having with them showed me they really wanted me and APOEL really wanted me, and they were going to be supportive and they have been so supportive of me since I've been here."

His final appearance for the club came in February, substituted at half-time in a 3-2 defeat to Ethnikos.

In a brief statement on Friday, APOEL confirmed the termination of Byrne's contract, adding, "We wish Jack good luck in his professional career and personal life."

Byrne had been linked with a move to future MLS expansion side, Charlotte.

However, he will not be able to sign for a new club until the opening of the next transfer window.
