Ireland keeper Elliot departs Newcastle as Carroll gets new deal

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Rob Elliot is one of a number of players who will leave Newcastle United at the end of this month.

The 34-year old has not been offered an extension at the club he joined in 2011.

However, fresh from debuting his Geoff from Byker Grove look, Andy Carroll's been handed a one-year extension at St. James' Park.

Matty Longstaff's deal is due to expire on June 30, but he's signed an extension to stay at the club until the season's end.

Former Atletico Madrid full-back Javi Manquillo has agreed a new four-year deal.

Danny Rose and Nabil Bentaleb have agreed to extend their respective loan deals from Tottenham and Schalke.

An agreement is in place to also extend Valentino Lazaro's loan from Inter, with paperwork due to be completed in the coming days.

Joining Elliot in leaving Newcastle will be Jack Colback and Jamie Sterry.

Elliot was named the club's player of the season in 2015-16, despite Newcastle being relegated to the Championship.

He made 68 appearances for the Tyneside club, but had his progress halted by an anterior ligament injury sustained in March of 2016 that denied him a place at Euro 2016.

His 16-minutes in a friendly against Slovakia remain his last international involvement.

After six months on the sidelines Elliot was never able to permanently replace Karl Darlow, and latterly Martin Dubravka in the Newcastle goal.

Toon manager Steve Bruce expressed his gratitude to the departing players, saying, "Many of the players leaving us have been with the club for a long time and, both personally and on behalf of the club, I'd like to thank them."

However, with seven games to go in the Premier League season and an FA Cup quarter final still to play, Bruce is chuffed to be able to call on the likes of Carroll, Longstaff and Manquillo.

"I'm really pleased that we have been able to put these extensions in place," he told NUFC.co.uk, "and I'd like to thank the players for committing themselves to the club with some very important games left to play.

"We have been proactive in trying to reach these agreements and they will give us the best chance of finishing the season as strongly as possible."
