Irish striker Michael Obafemi shortlisted for prestigious Golden Boy award

After an impressive season for Southampton which saw him score three goals, the Irish forward is now fighting it out against the likes of Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland for the very prestigious honour.

After clinching a dramatic equaliser for Southampton against Manchester United at Old Trafford, July keeps getting better for Michael Obafemi because he has made the 80 man shortlist for 2020 Golden Boy.

The updated list has has been cut down from 100 players to 80 by the Italian Newspaper Tuttosport who present the award.

To qualify for the award, the player must be under the age of 21 and be playing play in a European nation's top tier.

Aside from Sancho and Haaland, Obafemi is in excellent company with the likes of Mason Greenwood, Alphonso Davies, Ansu Fati, Phil Foden, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Vinicius Junior all making the grade.

In terms of recent winners, Atletico Madrid attacker João Félix is the current holder, while the likes of Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, and Kylian Mbappé have won the award in previous years.

After making his debut for the Saints at the age of 17 years and 199 days, Obafemi has established himself as a key member of Ralph Hasenhüttl's squad.

This season saw him score three goals - he registered a vital one in Southampton's 2-0 win against Chelsea and more recently at Old Trafford.

In terms of his immediate future, Obafemi will be hoping to hoping to make an impact when Southampton travel to Bournemouth on Sunday.
