'T. J. Reid for me is the clear frontrunner' | Mike Verney on the Hurler of the Year

When the dust finally settles after the All-Ireland final on Sunday one question will ultimately remain. Who should be the Hurler of the Year? T. J. Reid seems to be top of the list for most people.

With Mike Verney dressed in his "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan attire after losing last week's quiz, The Hurling Show crew discussed who they think should get the award.

“It’s only going to be a shortlist of three, T. J. Reid for me is the clear frontrunner, Eoin Murphy has been unbelievable off limited enough game time as well.

“If Brendan Maher shuts downs T. J. in the final as he has shut down Aaron Gillane, as he has shut down Rory O’Connor, he’d probably have to come into the equation too," Hollywood Verney said.

There were some outside shouts as well but as Verney said it usually comes down to players who made it to the All-Ireland final.

Top scorer

“Outside of that, Patrick Horgan has been insane but if you’re not getting to an All-Ireland final realistically you’re not going to be in the running."

It was no surprise that Tipp's own Shane Stapleton made the case for Tipperary full-forward Seamus Callanan.

“It would be Callanan’s fourth nomination as Hurler of the Year if he does get nominated.

“If he has any sort of a final he will be, he’s scored 7-16 from play in the championship, which means he will finish up being the top scorer from play.

“He has scored more from play over the course of his career than of the big guns on any of the other teams," Stapleton said.
