The Government will meet this afternoon and are set to sign off on contact sport being permitted from Monday June 29th, subject to public health guidelines.
The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) convened yesterday and furnished advice to the Government over phases three and four of the lockdown, and OTB Sports understands that the Government is poised to lift restrictions.
Sporting organisations had been hoping for an easing of stringent measures preventing sporting contact before the 20th July.
The Cabinet is meeting this afternoon and will likely make a major announcement this evening, with specific public health protocols in place.
Sporting bodies will then decide individually about how to plan the roll out of their respective disciplines.
While some sports such as golf, horse racing, cricket and hockey have been in a position to resume, the expected Government acceleration of measures will allow contact sport to take place across the board in 10 days time.
If the GAA had to wait until July 20th, it would only allow 11 days for teams to fully train before the county championships are set to resume on July 31st.
It's not expected that this change will affect the dates of the GAA road map around a return to play, with the club championship still slated to run within individual counties for 11 weeks from July until the middle of October.
Inter county training will be officially permitted from the middle of September, with inter county Championships set to be held on a knockout basis between October 17th and the end of 2020.
