Peter Queally won't be the next Waterford hurling manager

Peter Queally will not be the next Waterford senior hurling manager.

A selector under Davy Fitzgerald in 2013, Queally had been the strong favourite to succeed Paraic Fanning in the role.

It's reported that Kilkenny legend Henry Shefflin is instead the man to lead Waterford from 2020.

Shefflin is currently in charge of Ballyhale Shamrocks and led them to this year's All Ireland Club hurling title, having edged out Waterford's own Ballygunner in the semi-finals.

Fanning stepped down after a solitary year in charge having lost all four games in this year's Munster Hurling Championship round-robin.

Queally was believed to have assembled an Avengers-esque backroom team after being nominated by two clubs for the position. Dan Shanahan was set for a return to the fold having served as a selector when the Deise reached the 2017 All Ireland semi-final.

Former Cork senior hurling manager Denis Walsh was also set to work with Queally, which would have seen him draw on his spell in charge of Ballygunner. A former lieutenant of Justin McCarthy - Gerry Fitzpatrick - was lined up as fitness coach.

It was thought Queally was to be installed prior to next Sunday's Waterford hurling championship semi-finals.

However, according to WLR, the county selection committee have chosen another manager who will be announced only following ratification by the Waterford County Board.
