"I've never eaten vegetables!" - Wexford legend Martin Storey

Back in 1996, Martin Storey captained Wexford to All-Ireland hurling glory.

But he did so without the nutritional benefits of vegetables per the man himself's own recollection.

He was speaking on our 16th episode of The Hurling Show when he touched on eating habits.

"Well, I've never eaten vegetables," he revealed.

"I reckon if you want to get some goodness out of carrots, you'd probably have to eat 3-4 kilograms.

"If you just take a Vitamin C drink in the morning, it'll do the same job all day. That's probably the wrong thing to say.

"I was just a finicky eater all my life. You like what you like but if I get up in the morning, I would have three Weetabix with a bowl of granola on top it.

"So there's enough substance in that and roughage in that to do you and you're able to replace stuff you don't like."

He recalled when ex-Wexford manager Liam Griffin would add spinach to their plates after training.

"I used to look at it and I'd nearly vomit," he said, adding that most of the other players loved their spinach.

Wexford 2019

On a more serious note, however, Wexford have silverware in 2019. They beat Kilkenny in last Sunday's Leinster Hurling final to earn their first provincial crown in over a decade.

He feels Wexford's crop have now begun to mature at a time when other rivals, with the exception of Limerick, have slipped back into the pack.

And he sees no reason why Wexford can't challenge for the All-Ireland.

"Dublin, Tipperary or Laois, I think we'd have a 50:50 chance with any of those," he said.

"I can't see why we can't make an All-Ireland final. I can't see why you can't go all the way. That's not trying to blow it up and try and make it a big thing. I mean, my interpretation of Davy [Fitzgerald]'s progress would be getting us to the last-four.

"I'd have to totally commend him on that. People thought I didn't like Davy but it's not that I didn't like Davy. I didn't like his game-plan. But that's nothing to do with the person. He's a great motivator and passionate as could be about it. But if he went back to the old system, I'd be giving out tomorrow again."
