Limerick fight back at Semple Stadium as Hurling League gets underway

Goals from Gearoid Hegarty and Aaron Gillane made all the difference as reigning National Hurling League Champions Limerick beat All-Ireland Champions Tipperary by two points at Semple Stadium.

After being 9 points down at half-time John Kiely's side fought back to win on a scoreline of 2-14 to 18 points in the opening league fixture of the year.

The two sides hadn't met since last year's Munster final which Limerick won by 12 points.

Speaking to Eir Sport after the game, man of the match Limerick's Barry Nash felt a very different side came out of the dressing room after the break.

"We kinda started very dead in the first-half, came in at half-time and knew we had a lot of work to do.

"John and Paul spoke very well at half-time, they really settled us down, all we needed to do was relax and get into.

"A lot of things like the breaking ball Tipperary were all over us, they were on top of us, they were winning every breaking ball and that was one of our goals in the second half - to get out and try and get on top there and I think we did very well in the second half.

"I suppose some days you come out and it's not your day but thankfully we came in and got our heads screwed on in the second half and we got out and we were flying it."

Nash also spoke about the hunger and desire of their players, which was to be seen in the second half as they scored an impressive 2-10.

He put the high standards down to players competing for places in the starting 15.

"We're all fighting for positions in this Limerick team, the panel is so competitive, anyone could be playing in a different day.

"As long as we keep bringing it to training and bring it to the match we'll get oour places.

"We're looking forward to Galway now. We'll go home, recoup and do a video analysis session and get ready for next week."

Limerick take on Galway at the LIT Gaelic Grounds at 2.30pm on Sunday 2nd February in what will be both their second games of the 2020 Allianz National Hurling League.
