Galway camogie captain - 'My teammates died with their boots on'

Galway camogie captain Sarah Dervan says her teammates "died with their boots on" in securing the county's third All-Ireland senior title at Croke Park yesterday.

The Tribes defeated Kilkenny on a scoreline of 3-14 to 17 points to complete the League and Championship double. Two goals from Ailish O'Reilly and a third from Niamh Hannify helped secure the victory, while there was a standout performance from Niamh Kilkenny who scored four points from midfield.

"I can't believe it, it is just a dream come true. I'm honoured and behalf of all the women it is just unreal. All the work we did has just paid off. To win the League and then to go on and win the Championship is just unbelievable. I couldn't be more happy for each of those girls, we put our lives on hold and worked hard. I'm just thrilled.

"We knew if we upped the work rate from what we did against Cork, we knew we would have a serious chance. Look, we knew Kilkenny were going to bring it and it was up to us to match it and more. Thankfully each and every one of the girls - they died with their boots on - they were absolutely fantastic.

"Our management has been absolutely unbelievable. They've put so much belief into us it's just unreal. The work rate the dedication, the stuff they do behind the scenes came out there today from us, and we cannot thank them enough for all the work they've done.

"We were doing strength and conditioning back in early November and as I said they put their lives on hold. They dedicated all their time and effort to make sure we got the best of the best, we were treated just as good as the hurlers. It was so professional, they left no stone unturned. We are forever indebted to them."
