GAA contact training set to resume from June 29th

The Government will meet this afternoon and are set to sign off on contact training being permitted for sport, including GAA, from Monday June 29th.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) convened yesterday and furnished advice to the Government over phases three and four of the lockdown, and OTB Sports understands that the Government is poised to lift restrictions.

Sporting organisations had been hoping for an easing of stringent measures preventing contact in sporting matches before the 20th July.

The Cabinet is meeting this afternoon and will likely make a major announcement this evening.

Right now, contract training for GAA clubs is only permitted from July 20th, giving only 11 days for teams to fully train before the county championships are set to resume on July 31st.

The likely change in Government policy will allow training from Monday week and will be subject to public health guidelines.

It's not expected that this change will affect the dates of the GAA road map around a return to play, with the club championship still slated to run within individual counties for 11 weeks from July until the middle of October.

Inter county training will be officially permitted from the middle of September, with inter county Championships set to be held on a knockout basis between October 17th and the end of 2020.

At the moment, contract training does not fall within Sport Ireland's social distancing guidelines.

While some sports such as golf, horse racing, cricket and hockey have been in a position to resume, the expected Government acceleration of measures will allow contract training to take place for all sports in 10 days time.
