A Waterford comeback? Derek McGrath reveals the pros and cons he's weighing up

Is Derek McGrath planning to return as Waterford hurling manager?

It's certainly something he's pondering carefully as he outlined in his in-depth chat with Joe Molloy.

The ex-Deise manager was in studio to discuss the Electric Ireland GAA Minor Hurling Championship and touched on his own future.

There is a vacancy now since his successor Paraic Fanning has resigned.

"I got a text while I was away to say that Paraic has stepped down," he began.

"My mind is muddled on it. I said to my wife, 'Would I be mad going back to that?' And she goes, 'You'd be completely mad'.

Thought Process

"I'm in between and that's the way I've been all week. There's part of me thinking it's too soon. There's part of me thinking my young lad's in first year [and can I] get him to Junior Cert. The oldest boy is Junior Cert and we can get him to something in two years' time.

"There's part of me thinking there's good people in Waterford who would like a stab at [the job]. So that's where I'm at. I haven't thought about it but I'm beginning to think about it, if you like.

"I'm in between I suppose. Because you've no divine right to automatically just say, 'I'm going to go for it and I'm going to get it'. And I think you have to have all your energy and all your wits about you."

McGrath, who's been back teaching, contrasted his thought process now with when he successfully applied for the role the first time.

"The last time I went for it, I was completely all-in. Even applying for the job the last time, I was completely immersed in the whole process of getting the interview sorted, getting the video analysis ready for the interview," he said.

"And there was no ambiguity in my thought process. But there's definite ambiguity now. Which suggests that ultimately there's only 20% of me saying... and there's only one way to do it, you know."
