"It would have broken my heart" | Davy Fitzgerald commits future to Wexford

It has been confirmed that Davy Fitzgerald will remain in charge of Wexford's senior hurlers despite speculation linking the Clare native elsewhere.

A little over one-month after Micheal Donoghue announced his surprising departure from Galway, Fitzgerald, who led Wexford to Leinster success this year, looked primed to take over the role.

However, he has now announced his intention to remain with Wexford for the foreseeable future.

Joining ahead of the 2017 season, Davy Fitzgerald has been quick to build up a winning rapport with the players.

Amid speculation that he was ready to walk away from the role before this year's championship, the county's players themselves famously made the cross-country journey to Fitzgerald's Clare home in the hope of convincing him to stay on.

"It would have broken my heart to walk away from these Wexford players and, in the end, I just couldn’t do that," explained Fitzgerald to the Irish Independent.

"This was never about a choice between Wexford and another county."

An All-Ireland winning manager with Clare in 2013, the main source of doubt surrounding Davy Fitzgerald's future in Ireland's south-east appeared to stem from his rigorous travelling commitments.

"The problem I’ve always had is that the journey to Wexford is an absolute killer," he admitted.

"I was actually going to give up after two years only the players came to my house, appealing for me to give it another year."

Guiding Wexford to an All-Ireland semi-final in 2019, his side were narrowly beaten by the competition's eventual winners, Tipperary.

A pulsating clash, it had appeared that Fitzgerald's side were almost at a point where they themselves could be considered serious All-Ireland contenders.

The Liam MacCarthy Cup has remained absent from Wexford since their famous 1996 defeat of Limerick, but, with Davy Fitzgerald now committed for at least one more year, the county's fans will be hoping that he can bring the county to their full potential in 2020.
