'Cork are a managerless, rudderless team' | GAA Hurling Power Rankings

Our resident list aficionado Eoin Sheahan turned his attention to hurling this week on Tuesday's OTB AM as he subjected even more sides to his Specsavers GAA Power Rankings.

He didn’t bother going past the top eight sides in his rankings, surely much to Dublin and Laois’ dismay, but did show some regret afterwards.

“I should have done it down to 10. Laois vs Dublin for number nine would have been an interesting battle there,” Eoin mused.

There is some controversy as always, with the All-Ireland finalists Kilkenny coming in a bit lower than many fans may have expected.

“If Richie Hogan doesn’t get sent off they may be higher up these rankings. I think they were exposed as a team,” Eoin said, much to Ger Gilroy’s disbelief.

The Top Eight

Perhaps the first eye-catching placing is that of the Tribesmen who come in at sixth place. They were knocked out early on this year but it’s still a big drop for last year’s All-Ireland finalists.

Ger, however, wasn’t happy with Galway being placed below Cork.

“Cork don’t even have a manager at the moment. Cork are a managerless, rudderless team at the moment.

“If Galway played Cork every day for the next five days Galway would beat Cork four out of five,” Ger commented.

Eoin didn’t relent and gave credit to Cork for making it out of Munster while Galway failed to make it out of the ‘far weaker’ Leinster championship.

Somewhat surprisingly, one place ahead of Cork are the beaten finalists, Kilkenny. Ger again was having absolutely none of it.

“How far you get in the competition is important to your Power Rankings? Kilkenny reached the final and they’re the fourth-best team!

“Your own Power Rankings are inconsistent from positions five to four. You haven’t even followed your own rules!”

Eoin stuck to his guns putting Wexford third and Limerick second saying, “We both said yesterday that Tipperary vs Limerick was the All-Ireland final that we deserved. They are the two best teams in the country.”

The Power Rankings will return next week before Dublin take on Kerry in the All-Ireland Football Final.
