Senior Final | Galway vs Kilkenny

The All-Ireland camogie final on Sunday will see the final instalment of the rivalry of the summer - Galway versus Kilkenny.

Galway got the better of Kilkenny in the League final to get their hands on their first piece of silverware at a national level since 2015.

However, the Cats hit back with victory in the Championship, setting up an intriguing clash in the decider this weekend in Croke Park.

Galway’s Sarah Dervan said that in the aftermath of that League win it was a boost for the team to finally emerge victorious against Kilkenny.

“It made the girls believe in themselves a little bit more. 

“Kilkenny had beaten us three times the year before that, and this year in the Championship they came back and beat us by two points. 

“So we have a job on our hands,” Dervan admitted to Off The Ball’s Will O’Callaghan.

With every match between the two sides being closely contested matches Dervan expects the All-Ireland final to be no different this time around.

“There’s always a couple of points between the two teams and there’s going to be absolutely nothing between us again in the final,” she said.

With Galway in touching distance of winning their first All-Ireland title since 2013, Dervan explains how they will need to improve on their semi-final display against Cork.

The Cats are hoping to win a second All-Ireland title in four years with victory over Galway. 

Kilkenny ended their 22-year wait for a senior All-Ireland Camogie title and co-captain Meighan Farrell said that everything comes down to this one game.

“Every team has put it up to us this year but this is the one that you really want to win. It doesn’t really matter about any other matches at this stage,” Farrell said.

Despite being on the losing side of an All-Ireland final Farrell explains how Kilkenny are using that pain to motivate themselves.

“It always in the back of your mind but we’ve learned to forget about loses. You really need to concentrate on what’s on hand and that’s the All-Ireland final now,” she said.

Like her counterpart on the Galway side, Farrell similarly expects a tough match in the final.

“They’ve [Galway] always been there in the semi-final or League finals against us and it’s always been a dogfight and that’s how we’re presuming it will be again,” Farrell explained.

Intermediate Final | Galway vs Westmeath

Galway will also be taking part in the All-Ireland Intermediate final against Westmeath.

Six years ago Laura Ward was a water girl for the Galway team that won the senior camogie All-Ireland title, but now she will be leading her team out onto the pitch as the captain.

“In 2013 I was sort of in awe of the girls being like, ‘I want to be there.’ It’s great to finally get up to adult level and get to play in Croke Park in September,” Ward said.

Her father was also the manager of the team that day in 2013, but seeing the team come back with the cup was a huge motivation for girls around the county, according to Ward.

“They inspire you to be like them and now being up at adult level it’s great to be able to inspire younger girls coming after me,” she said.

Junior Final | Kerry vs Limerick

With the Kingdom back in Croke Park after losing to Dublin last year, they are hoping to be on the right side of the result this time around.

“You could see last year that the day didn’t get to Dublin whereas it did get to us and we just didn’t perform,” Laura Collins told Off The Ball.

With them playing in Division 2 in the league this year, Collins believes that Kerry are better prepared for this final.

With just one senior camogie club in the county, Collins hopes that winning this final would motivate more clubs to continue to grow.

“There’s girls there playing with clubs underage and they’re looking up to us now but it would mean so much to camogie in Kerry.

“We’ve only one senior club at the moment so it would help to continue building camogie in Kerry into the future,” she said.
