Exclusive: Son Heung-min speaks to Off The Ball after last-minute winner

Son Heung-min praised his teammate's character after grabbing a late winner for Tottenham against Aston Villa in a dramatic game at Villa Park.

The South Korean footballer was speaking to Off The Ball’s Nathan Murphy after the game and felt that the victory was all the sweeter after it went right to the wire.

“It was unbelievable. Winning is always good but especially winning in that way will make us even more happy.

“We fought from the start until the end. So we’re glad to get three points here and we’re very happy.

“I, of course, felt a bit of pressure because I had to run a long way and the keeper had a very good day and made some unbelievable saves. But I was very calm, I tried to be calm and tried to finish well.

“This is always what I try to do. Luckily the ball went inside [the post] and I was so, so happy to see the celebration of the away fans. I think it’s just the timing and the celebration was perfect,” Heung-min said.

Spurs have grabbed a number of narrow wins since Jose Mourinho took over and the Tottenham forward put their nerve-wracking victories down to the character of the team.

“Some of the games [this season] you’ve seen us turn it around. I think, for example, Olympiakos, Norwich, Southampton and now I think it’s all about character.

“I’m really happy to have this group and I’m lucky to have this quality playing with this team,” Heung-min commented.

Upcoming Champions League clash

Tottenham welcome RB Leipzig to north London on Wednesday where the two will duke it out in the first leg of the last-16 clash in the Champions League.

While Spurs made it all the way to the final last season, Heung-min stated that run is now in the past and that all focus was now directed to their German opponents.

“Last season we were in the Champions League final but that’s in the past and we don’t think about it too much. We just want to focus game by game and try to be ready for another big match.

“We’ll see what happens. Obviously they’re a big side and they’re doing an unbelievable job in Germany, so let’s see. I’m very excited,” Heung-min said.
