Reports suggest that Sean Dyche is considering leaving Burnley at the end of the season due to the deterioration in his relationship with chairman Mike Garlick.
“He (Garlick) should be down kissing Dyche’s boots,” John Giles told Nathan Murphy on Off The Ball.
Burnley moved into ninth place on Monday night after a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
“I think he should be in the running for manager of the year,” Giles said.
“The job this guy has done at Burnley is absolutely amazing. He should be given the freedom to do whatever needs to be done.”
Dyche has two years left on his contract, which if completed would see him spend almost 10 years at the club but tensions between him and the club’s board are high.
The 49-year-old Englishman is often talked about as the most underrated manager in the Premier League. “He’s underestimated in his own club,” Giles said.
Dyche was critical of the board after Burnley's heavy defeat to Manchester City, saying the club's contract situation was an unnecessary error which the board needed to learn from.
“He’s gone public on it which a lot of managers don’t do,” Giles said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he left now,” he added.
There are times in football when you’ve done everything you can at a certain club and “the time is right” to move on, Giles explained.
“I would advise him to get out now. He’ll get a much better job than he has at Burnley.”
He may not be in the running for the top jobs but “with the record that he has, there’s about eight clubs who would be after him,” Giles said.
Dyche and Burnley though have their critics for the way they play.
“He makes the most of what he has, it’s not particularly attractive, they wouldn’t be one of my favourite teams to watch but that’s by the by,” Giles said.
“What is he doing for Burnley, he’s keeping them in Premier League year in year out. That’s a very very difficult thing to do.”
“If Dyche leaves Burnley I think they could be back in the 2nd or 3rd tier in two or three years time.”
