"Jones tested positive"
Those were the words Daniel Cormier did not want to hear when he was called to an impromptu meeting with Dana White in the bowels of the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Wednesday night to tell him his fight with Jon Jones was cancelled at UFC 200.
His light-heavyweight title bout with Jones which was already postponed from April due to suffering a foot injury. Cormier was told of the news, just hours after meeting Jones face-to-face on a press conference.
"I trained so hard", Cormier told White, when hearing the news. He had gone through a full training camp in preparation for the fight.
Such was Cormier's shock at the news, he even tried to convince White to let the fight go ahead, despite Jones' potential doping violation. "Is there anything I can do?" he asked. "I'll sign a release, and we can just fight."
Cormier will now fight Anderson Silva in a non-title fight on Saturday night. The Brazilian was given the fight on 48 hours notice, it was announced on Thursday evening.
Jon Jones has also confirmed that he will have his B-Sample tested over his potential doping violation. The results should be known publicly in the coming days.
