WATCH: The incredible end of this horse race has changed everything about a no lose bet

Horse racing is one of the many sports that takes the money straight out of our pockets with the empty promise of putting some back in.

We all know the shortcomings when it comes to gambling and yet we will happily part with our money, particularly when we think we've found a sure thing. And for those who backed What’s The Scoop in the 2.40 at Sandown this afternoon, they must have thought they were sitting on a safe bet.

And after Barry Geraghty mounted the final hurdle, the punters would have had every right to start marching to the counter to collect their winnings. That is of course, before this happened.

Just didn't feel like winning today? Was this the actions of a horse who will no longer tolerate the ceaseless lashings of the whip? Irrespective of the horses's motives for this bizarre move, Starving Marvin went on to take the spoils.

Here's what the defeated Barry Geraghty said after the race:

''He jumped the last big and I knew he was having a look at the stands up the straight. It is a daunting place and he was having a big look when he got to the front.''

''When the rail ran out he just turned left - I still thought if I could pull him back on course five or six yards from the stands rail he would still win.''

''He just panicked as well as being a big baby. He is really intelligent - like his owner and trainer.''
