WATCH: From pushing an umpire to a life ban ... the many controversies of Pete Rose

Tonight on Off The Ball's US Sport slot, we'll be finding out about one of baseball's most controversial figures, Pete Rose.

The former Cincinatti Reds great holds many Major League Baseball records and accolades from his playing career, including being the leading hitter in MLB history with 4,256 hits, winning the World Series three times and having 17 All-Star awards to his name.

However, he has been involved in his fair share of controversy over the years.

In 1988 while manager of the Reds, the now-74-year-old got a 30-day suspension for pushing umpire Dave Pallone after the latter made a late call in a game against New York Mets:

In 1990, he pleaded guilty to tax evasion and served five months prison time as a result. He had failed to properly report income accrued from the sale of memorabilia and autographs.

Fourteen years later in his autobiography My Prison Without Bars, Rose admitted that he had also bet on matches while managing the Reds - although he denied that he had bet against his own team.

He had already been banned for life from Major League Baseball on the back of gambling allegations which surfaced in the late-80s.

Rose has since applied for that ban to be overturned numerous times, but each of these efforts has thus far been rejected.

ESPN's excellent 30 For 30 documentary series also made a short film about him:
