WATCH: Emotional Matthew Southgate tears up after best career finish

Yesterday's Irish Open final round may be remembered for Rory McIlroy's on-course heroics or for that shot on the 18th, but it will remain special for a different reason for England's Matthew Southgate.

The 27-year-old finished in fourth place after a birdie on the last, securing his best finish at a tour event.

Having endured a difficult time on the Challenge Tour in 2015, Southgate was diagnosed with testicular cancer last July and underwent treatment.

Upon his return from surgery, he made it through Q School to earn his European Tour card for this season and yesterday's top five finish earns him €200,000, his biggest win to date.

A top five finish this week also means that Southgate qualifies for the BMW PGA Championship next week, one of the flagship events on the European Tour.

Here he is pictured with his two-year-old niece, Hattie, who also suffers from leukaemia, after yesterday's event.
