WATCH: A 170 checkout helped Gary Anderson retain his World title last night

Gary Anderson last night became only the fourth player to retain the World Darts Championships, 12 months after winning his first title.

The Flying Scotsman joined Eric Bristow, Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis in retaining the title the the first time of asking. Anderson defeated Lewis 7-5 in last night's final to win the £300,000 (€406,000 approx) first prize.

Anderson, was the only player to complete a nine-dart finish in the tournament and in the penultimate leg of the final, he recorded his second 170 checkout of the championship. He was the only player to hit the 170 out shot twice in the tournament.

Despite Anderson's maximum checkout in the last set, he was one leg away from matching Ted Hankey's feat of winning a World title with the 170 finish.

The Count won the 2000 BDO World Championship in stunning fashion, winning the title with the games toughest possible out shot.
