WADA reacts to "deeply unsettling" doping allegations uncovered by The Sunday Times

The World Anti-Doping Agency says that the latest allegations of doping within British sport are "deeply unsettling".

The British government has ordered an inquiry into the UK Anti-Doping Agency over its handling of the investigation after it emerged that it had failed to pass on information from a whistle-blower in relation to London-based private doctor, Mark Bonar.

UKAD say that the doctor was outside of their jurisdiction, which meant that they were unable to take any disciplinary action against him.

However, WADA say that it has introduced strong rules within the World Anti-Doping Code which ensure that unscrupulous support personnel that cheat the system are sanctioned fully.

In a statement, they said: "The doping allegations raised in the Sunday Times this past weekend are deeply unsettling to athletes and indeed sports fans worldwide who demand and expect clean sport. While in this case the private doctor in question was not governed by sport and therefore was outside the jurisdiction of the Code, WADA and the anti-doping community is only too aware of the negative influence entourage members can have in influencing their athletes to dope, and that is why we introduced strong rules within the World Anti-Doping Code at the start of 2015, which ensure unscrupulous support personnel that cheat the system are sanctioned fully.

"WADA wholeheartedly supports an independent review of the Sunday Times allegations being undertaken in the United Kingdom. We await any conclusions from such inquiry with interest."
