Tiger Woods claims "alcohol was not involved" in DUI arrest

Hours after Tiger Woods' arrest for a DUI charge was revealed, the golfer revealed that "alcohol was not involved".

The 41-year-old was arrested near his Florida home on Monday morning at 3am local time. He was released almost eight hours later at 10.50am.

Woods released a statement on Monday night where he said; "I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions,"

"I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved", he continued. "What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly."

Despite the DUI arrest, the golfer said he would "do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again."

Woods has not played competitively since January. He underwent back surgery last month in a bid to improve his quality of life, with the hope of returning to the golf course.

"Presently, I’m not looking ahead", Woods revealed last week. "I can’t twist for another two and a half to three months. Right now, my sole focus is rehab and doing what the doctors tell me."

"I could no longer live with the pain I had. We tried every possible non-surgical route and nothing worked. I had good days and bad days, but the pain was usually there, and I couldn’t do much. Even lying down hurt."
