'It looks as if Froome has the upper hand on Wiggins'

Listen to the full interview via the podcast

Bradley Wiggins’ place in next months Tour de France looks increasingly under threat.

The 2012 Tour champion has been kept away from team-mate Chris Froome for the pair’s warm up races next week. In the past few days, Froome had suggested that Australian Richie Porte is best suited to be his number two.

Jeremy Whittle, cycling journalist and author of Bad Blood: The Secret Life of the Tour De France joined us on the line to discuss the tense atmosphere between Wiggins and Froome.

"It seems to be coming to a head again as we move towards the start of the Tour de France in Yorkshire. For me it's unthinkable that Bradley Wiggins wouldn't start the Tour in Yorkshire, especially as he is the flagship for Team Sky in terms of their sponsorship. But it looks as if Froome has the upper hand at the moment," said Whittle, who admits that revelations from Froome's autobiography has made the relationship even more fraught.

Whittle believes that Froome probably thinks that he could have won more major races had Wiggins not been on the scene.

He also contrasted the more abrasive Wiggins and the much outwardly composed Froome and Whittle believes Wiggins will have to leave Sky.
