Rory McIlroy has a job on his hands if he is to drag himself back into contention on day two of the US Open.

The World No 1 starts the day on 2-over after a disappointing opening 72.

Graeme McDowell is way off the pace on 4-over par.

 

GAELIC GAMES

Colin Walshe makes his return to the Monaghan side following a cruciate injury for Sunday's Ulster Football semi-final with Fermanagh.

He replaces Drew Wylie in the full-back line, after the Ballybay man suffered a knee ligament injury of his own.

 

Meanwhile, Pat Flanagan has kept faith with the side that lost to Longford in the first round of the Leinster Championship, for Saturday's qualifier with Waterford in Dungarvan.

 

RACING

The Aidan O'Brien - Ryan Moore tandem is hoping for further success at Royal Ascot today.

The first at Ascot is off at 2.30pm today.

 

Here at home, they go at Limerick this evening where the first is off at 5.40pm.

The first on a seven-race card at Down Royal goes to post at 5.50pm.

 

EUROPEAN GAMES

At the European Games, Natasha MacManus is the first of the Irish in action today in Baku.

She competes in the preliminary round of the 1-metre springboard diving competition.

Belfast boxer Brendan Irvine is in last-16 action in the men's light-flyweight division. He faces Bulgarian Tinko Banabakov.

Ceire Smith faces Norwegian Camilla Johansen in the women's light flyweight last-16.

Meanhile Sinead Cuthbert-Cunningham faces a Russian opponent in the first round of the womens archery.
