The Final Whistle: A busy day in the football championship

GOLF

It was an eventful day at the 144th edition of The Open at St Andrew’s.

Play finished early on Friday evening as a result of worsening weather conditions and players were unable to finish their second round.

This theme continued today, with players returning to the course to but play was postponed again with wind speeds increasing by between 10 and 15 per cent.

Play resumed after 5pm today and will now conclude on Monday for only the second time in the competition’s history.

Danny Willett began the day as clubhouse leader, but it is Dustin Johnson (-10) who will go into the third round at the summit of the leaderboard.

To the surprise of many, amateur Paul Dunne is the best of the Irish (-6).

Organisers of the event will hope conditions improve and that the world’s best golfers won’t fall victim to the wind and rain.

GAA

A busy day in the football qualifiers saw no real upsets, but there was one surprise announcement in Peter Creedon departing as Tipperary football manager.

The decision comes in the wake of the Premier County’s 12-point loss to Tyrone today, a performance which saw Tipperary only manage to register a solitary point in the second half.

Elsewhere, conditions were worse in Salthill than in St Andrew’s, but this didn’t deter an incisive Galway side running out eight-point winners over Derry.

Gary Sice put on a shooting exhibition and Danny Cummins scored the decisive goal to guarantee the Tribesmen safe passage to round 4 of the qualifiers.

Some controversial refereeing also saw the departure of Brian McIver as Derry supremo. McIver had a few choice words regarding referee Conor Lane's performance.

In the day’s late throw-in, Kerry were once again crowned Munster senior football champions with a five-point win over fierce rivals Cork.

Despite a close competitive game in the first match, Kerry always looked the stronger of the two sides and with 20 minutes to go scored the decisive goal to carry them through.

CYCLING

Steve Cummings was today’s surprise package at the Tour de France as he stormed to victory in stage 14 of the competition.

The 34-year-old mounted an assault on the final 2km to secure win and his first ever TdF stage victory.

Elsewhere, Chris Froome alleges to have had urine thrown over him during today’s stage.

Froome currently leads the Tour and claims a man threw a cup of urine over him and shouted the word “doper” at him also.
