Team Ireland boost their medal tally in Special Olympics

It was another stellar day for Team Ireland in the 2015 Special Olympics, with the home nation bumping up their medal tally to 22.

Day four brought with it another seven medals across sports including Table Tennis, Equestrian and Athletics. 

Ailish Smyth, Athletics Head Coach, was blown away by the athlete's performances despite the blistering 30 degree heat.

"I cannot believe they are running out of their skin and achieving personal bests. It's excellent. James [Meenan] ran fantastic at super speed. It’s so thrilling to see them all in action," she said.

Meenan, a Dundalk native, was one of the day's first winners, collecting bronze in the 200 metres.

It was also a great day for Rachel Ryan of Tipperary, who posted her personal best to pick up gold in the 400 metres.

“I’m very happy and excited, I didn’t think I was going to come first but I guess when you don’t think a thing it ends up happening. So I’m very excited," said the 26-year-old.

The Equestrian Centre in Griffith Park was the scene for yet more Irish success, with four medals the tally this time for the athletes.

Dublin's Elizabeth Mair and Dearbhail Savage of Armagh collected gold, while there were silver and bronze medals for Sligo's Thomas Connolly and John Deevy of Waterford respectively.

 To round off another excellent day for the Irish abroad, Frances Power of Navan, Co. Meath, collected gold after a strong performance in the singles table tennis.

Sports Minister, Michael Ring said:“Winning a gold or any medal for your country at a world games is a tremendous achievement and I want to congratulate all of the athletes on their success so far.

"I am sure their family, friends and supporters are delighted and I want to add my voice to all those who are wishing them well and willing the rest of the team on."

Ireland has 88 athletes taking part with the focus today moving to long beach for the kayaking and open sea swimming competitions.
