Snooker legend Steve Davis has announced his retirement from the game following his failure to qualify for this year's World Championships.
The 58-year-old's career spanned 38 years, making his debut way back in 1978 before dominating the sport for almost a decade in the 1980's.
Winning six world titles and 28 ranking titles overall, joint second on the list with John Higgins and Ronnie O'Sullivan, he spent seven years as world number one between 1983 and 1990 and retires as one of the most successful people to have ever played the game.
Davis' last match came against Irishman Fergal O'Brien on the 10th of April, a loss which meant he would not participate at the Crucible this year.
After announcing his retirement live on the BBC during this year's World Championships, Davis was afforded a lap of honour in front of the crowd with the trophy he last won in 1989.
"The Fergal O'Brien match was my last and I told Barry Hearn (his manager) it was time to call it a day. My father passed away recently and it was natural time to stop playing." he told the BBC.
"I should have done it ages ago, I played a bit for my father. I am delighted to have such a great time in the game, I was lucky to have a hobby as my profession.
"It has been a fantastic. The game will move on to other places but I feel like the grandfather of the sport."
