Shane Lowry: Sometimes golf gives you a bit of a slap in the face and a reality check

Former Irish Open winner Shane Lowry joined Wednesday's Off the Ball to discuss his recent form and how the birth of his daughter has changed his life.

The Offaly native spoke candidly about the complexities of the game and how he has adapted his approach leading into events.

"Golf is like the weirdest game in the world," he said, adding: "Where I've played great leading up to a tournament - missed cut. I've played quite poorly and then went on to win. You know, I won in Acron playing quite poorly so it's a weird game whereas I think I've come to the conclusion now that I just go out on a Thursday and play with what you have on the day.

"France was a bit weird last week as well. I just didn't play well. It shocked me a little bit because I was expecting to play well. So sometimes this game kind of gives you a little bit and sometimes it gives you a bit of a slap in the face and a reality check to focus a bit more."

With the recent birth of his daughter, Iris, Lowry's priorities have shifted but even still, the thought of bringing home a trophy to his little girl drives him on.

"Up until the last year or two, it (golf) was the be-all-and-end-all for me because I didn't really have anything else but now I'm married with a kid and it's a bit different so.

"You can't explain how amazing it is to go home to your kid like. She's only four months old but to see her lying back there smiling up at you - it's like the best thing ever. This is her first tournament this week so hopefully she brings me a bit of good luck.

"I'm out there doing it for them now. I just can't wait until I win my first tournament and bring the trophy home to her. That's one thing I have in my sights and that's probably the main reason...I just want to win a tournament and bring the trophy home to her," he added.
