Shane Lowry: “I find Irish Opens difficult but I don’t know why”

Shane Lowry believes he put too much pressure on himself to perform at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

The 31-year-old finished with a score of two under par at Ballyliffin after enduring a frustrating Saturday on the greens.

And Lowry admitted he found finding his best level of performance a tough task in front of an Irish crowd.

“Wanting it too much is probably the biggest thing. The crowds probably want it for you too much as well,” Lowry told Off The Ball.

“It’s hard. I just find it difficult but I don’t know why. People at home may look at me and say I’m mad for saying that but that’s the way it is. It’s just difficult.

“I put too much pressure on myself for the start of the week. I said at the start of the week I wasn’t going to but yesterday afternoon I still did.

“It’s another Irish Open down and hopefully I’ll learn a little bit from this one but I haven’t seemed to learn from the last five or six, but we’ll see.”

Lowry cut a frustrated figure at Ballyliffin throughout the week and shared his excitement over his upcoming break ahead of The Open at Carnoustie.

“It’s hard. I’m out there trying to do so well. I’ve found this week quite difficult and quite draining, so I’m looking forward to having a few days off,” Lowry added.

“The putter left me for about nine or 10 holes for me yesterday and I somehow got it back today. I think there’s certain parts of my game that I really need to sharpen up before Carnoustie because we all know how hard it is.

“I just need to go away for the next week or so and get them better than they were this week and see what sort of game I bring to Carnsoustie and try and do my best there.”
