On the 12th of December, Conor McGregor fights Jose Aldo in a fight that the world has been longing for since Aldo pulled out of their previous fight with a rib injury in the summer of this year.
McGregor beat the #1 contender Chad Mendes in a bout that was fixed at the 11th hour and McGregor now holds the UFC Interim Featherweight belt as the countdown for UFC 194 continues.
Aldo is one of the greatest champions in the history of the UFC but McGregor does not believe he should be considered the champ any more given the fact that he pulled out of their previously arranged fight in July.
In an interview with GQ, McGregor speaks about everything from politics to Jose Mourinho and the money he is set to make from his next UFC deal.
The interviewer, Alastair Campbell, refers to McGregor as the interim champ, for the first time, and the Dubliner responds with dissent,
"F*** that, what do you mean interim? Aldo and I had a date, he didn't show, someone else took his place, I beat him, easy. So don't give me interim."
The second time around, however, McGregor warns Campbell about the use of the word, "say "interim" again and you'll be polishing my belts for me. Both of them."
McGregor also spoke about Floyd Mayweather, his business acumen and what would happen if the pair fought each other, "I respect his business. He's made a lot of money, calls himself Money Mayweather, he has done that bit well. I don't know the guy. But I know if we had a fight I would win. I could box against him, give him a fight, but he couldn't fight against me, it is a different sport, ours is a tougher sport. He would not last a minute with me because of the things we have to do which they don't do in boxing."
There seems to be an air of invincibility surround both men in Sunday's showdown. While we would like to believe both Aldo and McGregor about not losing, someone has to. This ties in to a piece written earlier in the week where Chad Sonnen claims both men are "sure they're going to lose". UFC is notoriously strong at marketing and any individual entering the octagon has to be their own marketing machine. It remains to be seen what would happen if McGregor were to lose though. Would the hype die down? Would the air of invincibility disappear?
McGregor continues to be a one man quote machine as the coverage of his fight steps up. Whether or not he will be still talking on Sunday morning after his fight at the MGM. One thing is for sure, he won't be the interim champion, whatever the result may be.
