Sam Torrance on dealing with mediocrity and being his father's son

"I'm pretty rotten now compared to what I was, that's the hardest thing to contend with, mediocrity ... compared to what I was," Sam Torrance reflects when asked if he's still enjoys playing golf.

Being the son of legendary coach Bob Torrance, Sam's golfing career started young.

"He never gave me a bigger bollocking in my life - for lying," he remembers when recalling his father's reaction when he came home to tell him he'd shot 39 on a nine hole course when he was only nine years of age.

He only convinced him that he was telling the truth when he managed to repeat the feat while his dad watched.

The former Ryder Cup captain believes it is a "shame" that long putters are being phased out of the game. He started using one in the early 70's after he developed a twitch in his hand.

"I developed a twitch, a horrible thing. Basically what it is is two hands trying to work with one and one hand involuntarily taking over at impact," he told Joe Molloy.

He never got to the bottom of the cause of the movement which he believed had psychological roots, despite the fact that he was generally a relaxed pro:

"Susanne, my missus, taught me a saying a long time ago, 'Worrying is an interest you pay on the inevitable.' ... You must never let things fester, you know, in three months time you'll look back and say, 'My God, I can't believe I was worried about that.'"

Talk soon turned to his father's relationship with Padraig Harrington, the Irish golfer credits Bob with helping him to transform his game:

"No one could out work my dad, no one. But Padraig came close."

He thinks they were a "match made in heaven."

According to Sam, fans shouldn't worry about Rory McIlroy's difficult season, he believes that the Northern Irish golfer will soon bounce back.
