Rory McIlroy withdraws from BMW PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy has pulled out of next week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The 2014 champion is still suffering with an ongoing rib injury.

The event gets underway at the course in Surrey on Thursday.

The Northern Irishman first sustained a rib problem at the South Africa Open in January and was ruled out for a number of weeks.

An MRI scan showed no new injury after he complained of discomfort during last weekend's Players Championship at Sawgrass.

In a statement via the European Tour, McIlroy said: "Having had a reaction to my earlier rib injury, I have been advised to take a conservative approach to my recovery which unfortunately means I have to withdraw from the BMW PGA Championship next week. It’s a disappointing decision to have to make, but I have to ensure I make a full recovery. I will now continue the process of preparing my game for the US Open and the rest of the season".

The 2017 US Open major takes place from June 15th-18th, with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in July.
