Rory McIlroy feeling confident ahead of The Open

Rory McIlroy believes his standard of putting on the final day of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open bodes well for his chances of claiming a fifth major at The Open in two weeks time.

The 29-year-old claimed the last of his four majors back in 2014 when he picked up the US PGA Championship but things have dried up since then for the Northern Irishman.

McIlroy ended with a score of two under par at Ballyliffin and displayed more consistency on the greens after a testing week in Donegal.

And McIlroy, despite failing to climb up the leaderboard, believes things are shaping up nicely for him going into The Open at Carnoustie.

“Just treat it like any other event,” McIlroy said.

“Prepare the way I normally prepare, go out and play – and see what happens. I’m not putting any pressure on myself. My record in the Open Championship has been pretty good in the last few years.

“If I can go out and just play my game and commit 100 per cent to what I’m doing, I’m sure I won’t be far away.

“I feel as if I’m a good path for putting. I don’t feel like I have to change anything. If I put for four days at Carnoustie like I did today then I’ll be happy."

McIlroy also touched on the influence Brad Faxon had on his putting game on the last day at Ballyliffin.

“We chatted last night. I got an email from him this morning and he sent me a couple of videos of my body language after all the missed puts this week,” McIlroy added.

“It was a good little reminder that attitude is very important out there on the greens and it seemed to help today.”
