PIC: Justin Gatlin's personal best is coming at an anomalous age

At the weekend American sprinter Justin Gatlin marked himself down as 2015's record holder in both the 100 and 200 metres.

Having set the fastest 100 metre time of the year at 9.74 seconds earlier this year, he followed it up with a 200 metres time of 19.57 seconds at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.

Here is that performance:

Of course, Gatlin is a controversial figure in athletics, having served a four-year ban after testing positive for a banned substance in 2006.

With the 33-year-old American setting personal best times, there has been disquiet in some quarters and many of those points were highlighted in an illuminating Sports Illustrated piece by Tim Layden.

One of the interesting points from that article was one made by Dr Ross Tucker (who has previously spoken to Off The Ball and will discuss Gatlin with us tonight) about the age that sprinters generally peak at in terms of personal best times.

They tend to achieve their best times in the 22 to 24 age range, whereas Gatlin is achieving it at a much later age in comparison to Usain Bolt (who he will go head-to-head against at the World Championships in Beijing in August), Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell as this image shows:

The Sports Illustrated piece also raises two other aspects. One is that Gatlin's sprint age is actually lower than his normal one because of the time spent on the sidelines due to his previous ban.

But they also discuss the research published last year by the University of Oslo - which suggests that the body can benefit from the use of anabolic steroids well after an individual has stopped using them - as well as Gatlin's own responses to those points.

That was something The Sports Gene author discussed with Newstalk at the 2014 Dublin Web Summit:
