Paul Kimmage was none too keen on shaking the hand of the UCI's ex chief

There is a court battle raging at present between anti-doping journalist Paul Kimmage and the former Union Cycliste International president Hein Verbruggen in Switzerland.

Verbruggen, who was in charge of world cycling's governing body between 1991 and 2005 at the height of the Lance Armstrong era, is demanding an apology from Kimmage, claiming defamation of character over criticisms of his handling of anti-doping, and an assurance that the Irish Sunday Independent writer will not write about him in future.

Cycling journalist Shane Stokes has been attendance at the court case and tonight he spoke to Off The Ball about the ebbs and flows of the proceedings, as well as what happened when Verbruggen tried to approach Kimmage with his hand.

"It was a little surreal for Paul because he went into the court and the first thing Hein Verbruggen did when he saw him was try and shake his hand. Needless to say, Paul was not having any of that," he said.

Stokes also assessed the first few stages of this year's Tour de France and what it means for the Irish riders.
